There is no cost to attend, but registration is required. Once registered, participants will receive a confirmation email with information on how to connect to the webinar.

The session will look at the specific challenges military-connected youth face related to substance-use disorders and show parents, caregivers and professionals how to build effective prevention strategies.

Understanding the risks

Youth from military families often face stressors not typical of their civilian peers, such as frequent relocations, deployment-related separations and the emotional toll of reintegration.

These factors, coupled with peer influence and family stress, can increase the likelihood of substance misuse. Research has shown that military-connected adolescents may be particularly vulnerable.

The webinar will be led by John Haenes, a licensed social worker and internationally certified prevention specialist with 32 years of experience in the field of substance use disorders, juvenile delinquency, trauma and child welfare. Haenes is the chief operations officer of Challenge of Tarrant County, a nonprofit agency that focuses on substance abuse issues.
